The
Cathedral is certainly the
most important monument of Cefalu.
It is one of
the finest examples
of Norman architecture of the period.
Legend has it that was built
in fulfillment of a
vow made to
SS. Savior, by Roger
II, who narrowly escaped
a storm, landed at
Cefalu. A
more likely motivation is
almost certainly political and
military as the rest
suggests the
appearance of a fortress where the
façade of the building
is situated between
two imposing towers
topped by pyramidal
gables and battlements,
perhaps to symbolize the two
different powers,
civil and religious.
Construction began in 1131.
The 1145
marks a particularly
significant with the adoption of the
decorative system of the mosaics
in the apse. The events
were very complex
construction with a series of
macroscopic changes in the
initial project, however it is
certain that the building was
never completed. The church
has a 'Latin cross plant
and consists of three
naves, separated by two rows
of columns with Romanesque
foundations. Inside
his remarkable height and
the momentum of its
arches, with the background
of its central apse,
solemn and majestic,
it reveals the grandeur of
style and delicacy
of art. If you
admire the entrance
seems to raise
a force mysterious
and sublime soul
of the visitor and
raise up to
God |
